I want a new camera...

Our first camera was a gift given to us six years ago and it takes OK pictures, but it runs on AA batteries, not very convenient. And the other camera we bought three years ago before our trip to Argentina because it was small and had video clip ability, but it does not take very good pictures. Oh, and I also spilled water on it, so the battery only lasts a few hours. I'm tired of grabbing a camera to take a quick shot only to find it out of juice. Or taking it with me and worrying about how long it will last (plus the pics are mediocre). So, please recommend a great camera to me, preferable less than $600. THANKS!

BHphotovideo.com has great prices for cameras. We've bought camera gear from there for the past 5 years and they have fast shipping and have never had problems.
Ed recommends the Canon g10 as 'the ultimate point and shoot'. I think it's just under $500. We've also liked the Canon Powershots but it's harder to get non blurry baby pics of twitchy babies with them.

I shoot all our blog pics with a Canon Rebel. You can get a Rebel XS with a basic zoom lens from Amazon for $501. Throw in a 50mm F/1.8 lens (another $100) for getting non-blurry pics in low light (and/or squirmy kids) without needing unnatural flash.

We like our Canon Powershot Digital Elph (it was around $200. We got it when Colin was a couple months old cause our Sony Cybershot started having problems focusing (leading to lots of pics where it focused on the background instead of the baby!) The only thing w/the Canon (and we were told with most of the smaller size cams) is lots of red-eye shots (especially when we first bought it). It doesn't seem to be as bad now. Hope you find a good one for a good deal.
